Advanced Creative Learning Portfolio

Program: Bachelor of Business Administration 

Course Description: Students explore and reflect on elements of their personal, professional and intellectual identities in order to map their developmental journey and plan for continued development. Through self-assessments, reflective activities and guided learning projects that take place in the community, students build a learning portfolio to chronicle their journey and plan for the future.

Becoming a Master Learner

Program: Bachelor of Business Administration 

Course Description: Students explore and reflect on the BBA philosophy (flipped classroom, activity-based learning, development of undergrad competencies, reflective practice), success skills, and attitudes, and Sheridan services that will help them to become a master learner in the BBA program. Through self-assessments, application of foundation skills to typical school challenges, and reflective activities, students build skills that can be applied and further developed throughout their BBA learning journey.

Undergrad Competency Development

Program: Bachelor of Business Administration 

Course Description: Students explore and reflect on the application of undergrad competencies to typical workplace tasks and challenges. Through self-assessments, application in a problem-based environment, and reflective activities, students build skills that can be applied and further developed throughout their BBA learning journey.

Human Resource Management 1

Program: Business Diploma

Course Description: Students examine the human resources activities required of all managers with a focus on the strategic role of human resources in the management of a business. Through hands on applications in the areas of legislation, job analysis, job descriptions, recruitment, selection and performance appraisal, students will produce human resources documents to support management decisions. Using situational problem solving, debates, role plays and lecture material, students choose appropriate options to address various human resources problems.

Human Resource Management 2

Program: Business Diploma

Course Description: This course completes students' introduction to the functions and activities of human resources. Through hands on application in the areas of Health & Safety, Compensation, Discipline & Termination and Training & Development, Labour Relations and Orientation, students begin to understand the contribution of each in a high performance organization. Using situational problem solving, debates, role-plays and lecture material, students choose appropriate options to address various human resources issues.

Performance Management

Program: Business Diploma

Course Description: Students examine processes used by management and human resource professionals to ensure employee behaviour supports the goals of the enterprise. Through group work, lectures, field investigation, role-playing and observation, students learn how companies can effectively guide the performance of employees through goal setting, identification and use of key competencies, coaching and counselling, progressive discipline (including termination), benchmarking, providing feedback, and performance appraisals. Applied exercises in developing competencies, in analyzing the links between business strategy and employee performance management, and in conducting one-on-one feedback interviews help the student develop skills that will enable them to contribute to effective performance management.

Communication and Mediation

Program: Business Diploma

Course Description: Students examine the fundamental principles, misconceptions and best practices of communications together with their impact on interactions with others. Focusing on self-awareness, students explore communication styles to identify their own individual style and the necessity to adjust that style appropriately in order to build and maintain positive relationships. Specific topics students explore include beliefs, emotional intelligence, professional presence, verbal and nonverbal behaviours, listening techniques, conflict management and the mediation process in a non-union environment. Students learn to recognize signs of ineffective communication and develop skills to influence others and create an open, interactive atmosphere. Through the use of experiential exercises, interactive class discussions, reflective exercises, group work and presentations, students gain an understanding of how their communication expertise can contribute to meeting business and personal goals.

Recruitment and Selection

Program: Business Diploma

Course Description: Through the use of lectures, cases, discussion, presentations, quizzes, role-play and group and individual exercises students study the process of Organizational Staffing. In the context of company strategy and global environmental pressures, students examine the stages of job analysis, legal compliance, measurement, recruitment, screening, testing, interviewing and decision making. Students design a Selection Interview Guide and use it to conduct a Selection Interview.

Human Resource Management 

Program: Business Diploma

Course Description: This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of human resource management (HRM) functions within organizations. This course will familiarize students with the nature of supervision in the workplace, with an emphasis on the management skill first-line supervisors are expected to possess. Leadership skills will be explored, including ethical/legal issues, hiring practices and performance appraisals. A focus on communication techniques, both toward subordinates and toward superiors, is emphasized.

Small Business Management 

Program: Business Diploma

Course Description: This course is designed to serve as an introduction to entrepreneurship. It will introduce the concepts of self-employment, small business ownership and the business plan. The goal of the course is to give students a basic understanding of the considerations involved in deciding to enter independent business and the steps involved in starting a new venture. Emphasis is placed on the benefits of entrepreneurship. At the same time, students will be given the opportunity to develop their skills in problem solving and decision-making.

Business Operations

Program: Business Diploma

Course Description: This course will allow students to expand on previous knowledge obtained in Introduction to Spa Management. All facets of running a spa will be covered: sales planning, retail trends, purchasing and inventory management, effective selling techniques and visual merchandising. Students will examine case studies of a variety of existing spa models.

Human Relations

Program: Business Diploma

Course Description: Develop interpersonal skills to successfully function in the workplace and the community. Investigate personal growth and development related to basic behaviour concepts.

Presentation Skills

Program: Business Diploma

Course Description: Use a variety of presentation and desktop publishing software  (including Microsoft PowerPoint)to create and deliver effective business presentations.

Software Skills and Project Management

Program: Business Diploma

Course Description: Create professional publications using Publisher, documents in Adobe Acrobat and diagrams with Visio. Investigate project management theories and initiate project planning through a project.

Training and Development

Program:  Post Graduate - Human Resource Management 

Course DescriptionThis course gives students the opportunity to build skills and knowledge in the application of theories and best practices in the facilitation of learning in an organizational context. Students will analyze the strategic importance of effective training and development initiatives and will develop the ability to analyze training needs, write learning objectives and plans to achieve them, create or source training programs, facilitate and evaluate training activities. In addition to lectures supported by web based materials learning activities include reading, analyzing cases, field research, role playing, structured experiences, and large and small group discussion. Students design a learning plan and also design and deliver a learning facilitation for classmates. The course focuses on the contribution of learning to the success of organizations. Students learn to define training needs by analyzing performance problems and to identify training solutions to current or potential performance gaps. The creation of learning objectives will be followed by the design or acquisition of programs, processes and other training activities to address learning needs. Skills are developed to allow students to deliver training modules. Students will be able to determine the best delivery methods, including technology based methods, to ensure efficient and effective training. Considerable emphasis will be given to the steps that can be taken before, during and after a training program to ensure that learners actually transfer new skills and knowledge back to the job. Students will be able to apply evaluation methods to measure training effectiveness at various levels including cost/benefit analysis. Students will also learn to apply adult learning principles in the design of training.

Career Management

Program:  Post Graduate - Business Diploma

Course DescriptionThis course focuses on career management skills needed to navigate the evolving workplace. Students will evaluate their skills, attitudes, and expectations within their chosen careers and explore emerging trends in the workplace. Students will refine their networking strategies and create marketing documents to position them for success. Mock interviews will provide the opportunity for practice, feedback, and reflection as students prepare for future interviews. Students will explore communication strategies that support workplace success and advancement. By the end of this course, students will have created a personalized career management plan.

Human Relations and Leadership

Program: Post Graduate - Business Diploma

Course DescriptionThis course explores professionalism, leadership, and personal attributes. Demonstrate a positive attitude for job performance, collaborate as a team player and provide exceptional customer service. The format of Human Relations & Leadership is a blended delivery with face to face and online components. The online learning activities are combination of readings, research activities that require internet access, discussion forum questions and a weekly online quiz. All details for the online learning portion are posted each week under the appropriate content module.
